NATO EOD COE and Italian C-IED Centre of Excellence Formalize bilateral Partnership

The NATO Explosive Ordnance Disposal Centre of Excellence (NATO EOD COE) recently hosted a distinguished delegation from Italy, marking an important step forward in strengthening international cooperation in Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) and Counter-Improvised Explosive Devices (C-IED).

The Italian delegation was led by Colonel Daniele Bajata, Commander of the Italian C-IED Centre of Excellence, accompanied by Captain Davide Brocchieri, Commander of the Training Support Company. Their visit underscored the shared commitment of both Centres to advancing operational effectiveness, innovation, and professional excellence within NATO.

The delegation was officially welcomed by the Director of the NATO EOD COE, Colonel František Mihalovič, who provided a comprehensive overview of the Centre’s history, mission, and strategic objectives. Following the visit’s agenda, Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Hugyar, PhD., Head of the Education and Training Department, presented the Centre’s current education and training portfolio, outlining how NATO EOD COE supports capability development across the Alliance. Captain Šimon Brigant, acting Head of the Transformation Support Department, together with Lieutenant Colonel Witold Plezia, Head of the EOD Technologies Department, briefed the delegation on recent initiatives e.g. doctrine, standardization and technological advancements. The programme also included a live demonstration of the ETACS project, showcasing the innovative use of virtual reality to enhance EOD training and readiness.

In exchange of information, the Italian delegation delivered an in-depth presentation on the core activities, mission, and specialized expertise of the Italian C-IED Centre of Excellence, highlighting areas of mutual interest and potential cooperation.

The visit concluded with the signing of a Technical Arrangement by both institutions’ Directors. This arrangement formally establishes a partnership, providing a solid framework for future collaboration, knowledge exchange, and synergy between the NATO EOD COE and the Italian C-IED Centre of Excellence.
