The 20th NATO CA2X2 Forum in Rome

The NATO EOD COE participated in the 20th NATO Computer Assisted Analysis, Exercise, Experimentation (CA2X2) Forum, organized by the NATO Modelling and Simulation Centre of Excellence (NATO M&S COE) and held in Rome, Italy.

This prestigious annual event brought together more than 400 participants from 35 nations and 20 exhibitors, representing NATO commands, Centers of Excellences, national defence institutions, academia and industry. The forum served as a key platform for exchanging knowledge, sharing best practices, and exploring innovative applications of modelling and simulation (M&S) in support of NATO operations, capability development, and decision-making processes.

The main theme of this year’s forum, “Train as You Fight,” underlined the importance of realistic, simulation-based environments that closely replicate contemporary operational challenges. Presentations and panel discussions focused on the integration of modelling and simulation (M&S) with multi-domain operations, where land, air, maritime, cyber, and space domains must be seamlessly interconnected through data-driven and adaptive systems.

A significant part of the forum was dedicated to AI-driven solutions, exploring how artificial intelligence can be leveraged to enhance training realism, decision support, and analysis. The discussions highlighted the potential of AI to optimize data processing, scenario generation, and performance assessment — ultimately contributing to more efficient, adaptive, and intelligent simulation environments across NATO.

For the NATO EOD COE, participation in the CA2X2 Forum provided an excellent opportunity to explore how modelling, simulation, and AI technologies can be applied in the EOD capability — particularly in training, mission rehearsal and capability development. Such innovations offer valuable prospects for developing future AI-supported training systems and data-informed decision-making tools that could significantly improve EOD readiness and interoperability.

The NATO EOD COE highly values this opportunity to contribute to and benefit from the collective expertise of the NATO M&S community, strengthening innovation, collaboration, and technological advancement within the Alliance.
